During a Eruption

If a Volcano Erupts Where You Live

  • Always follow the evacuation order issued by authorities. Evacuate IMMEDIATELY as volcanic conditions will only worsen with time.

  • While evacuating, be aware of mudflows or landslides. These pose huge threats to you in your evacuation process. Mudflow dangers increase near streams and rivers and worsen with heavy rains. If you cross a bridge, make sure to look upstream and DO NOT cross if you sight an approaching mudflow. Remember, mudflows move faster than any human can walk or run!

  • Avoid river valleys and low-lying areas.

  • Assist your elderly or disabled neighbors.

  • Stay tuned to radio or television networks for the latest emergency information and alerts.

If You Cannot Evacuate - Protect yourself from Falling Ash

  • Stay tuned to radio or television networks for the latest emergency information and alerts.

  • Wear long sleeve clothing and pants to protect your arms and legs.

  • Stay away from areas downwind of a volcano. These areas tend to have the worse conditions and the largest amounts of volcanic ash.

  • Remain inside until the ash has settled.

  • Close all doors, windows, and ventilation sources in the house.

  • If possible, safely clear all heavy ash from flat roofs and rain gutters. Only do so if safety allows.

  • Wear protective goggles and eyeglasses and avoid wearing contact lenses. Contact lenses can potentially allow ash and other debris particles to become trapped beneath them.

  • Use a dust mask. If you do not have one, simply hold a damp cloth over your face to assist with breathing.

  • Avoid driving. If you must drive, keep speeds below 35mph. Running a car or truck engine can stir up ash that has clogged engines, stalled vehicles, and lies on the roadways.

  • If you have any sort of respiratory ailment, avoid contact with ash at all times!
